Unlike most students, I started out my college career knowing EXACTLY what I wanted to do: become a Corrective Care Chiropractor- a resource to empower our community to regain health. How did I get there? My personal story is about a mother’s love. My oldest son was born in 1997, an even 8 pounds with white-blonde hair. Grandmas would stop us in the grocery store to coo over Taylor and tell us he looked like the Gerber baby.

Taylor was healthy by all standards I knew, he had no major illnesses and we spent the first year experiencing the milestones and growing together. And then things changed. In 1998 Taylor began to experience ear infections, a snotty nose and “allergies” that just never went away. Month after month we visited the pediatrician, Taylor’s chubby little baby hands pulling at his ears and tears in his eyes. Month after month we were sent home with yet another prescription for antibiotics and no other options.

As a mother who wanted the very best for my baby, I was frustrated and my gut told me there was a better way. We were not solving any problems, and meanwhile long-term dangers of antibiotic use were starting to come to light in the media. With the then-modern technology of Google I was able to research other options. We stopped milk products and started to use garlic-oil ear drops, we ate organic and even started switching to non-toxic cleaners and detergents. It did make some difference, but the ear infections persisted. That’s when I found a research article about chiropractic and ear infections. This article explained how subluxation- distress in the nerve system- can cause ill health, and it’s quite common to find this among children with chronic ear infections. A short week later, Taylor and I made our first trip to the chiropractor. She did find that Taylor had this nerve distress at a critical area of the spine called Atlas/ C1. And, moments later, a miracle happened for our small family- following that first adjustment Taylor never had another ear infection, his “allergies” resolved and I rarely saw another snotty nose.

Plano Chiropractor : Dr. Jennifer Taylor

It’s hard sometimes for me to believe that I started my career in Chiropractic all the way back in 1991…

I had just graduated from Humble High School and was truly disillusioned with my studies at The University of Houston. As many High School graduates feel, I just didn’t have a clue as to “what I wanted to be when I grew up.” I thought it was a good idea to take some time off to determine what direction that may be. Well, my father didn’t share my enthusiasm. So, I headed out to find a full-time job while on my “break.”

Little did I know that my career path would soon reveal itself through the life changes I was witness to while a Chiropractic Assistant. I was so hungry for knowledge in the field I soon earned my certificate as a Chiropractic Radiology Technologist and in 1995 I concluded my studies in massage therapy. I then started a thriving massage practice in Austin, Texas.

I continued my massage practice for seven years, working closely with area chiropractors. In 1997, after seeing a child that the medical doctors gave up on regain her health and vitality through chiropractic care, I realized that I needed to do more. I also continually found myself referring my clients to receive chiropractic care when massage no longer provided the relief they needed. I just had to be a part of the life changes I first witnessed as a Chiropractic Assistant.

Becoming a Chiropractor was the calling I had been waiting for…

I don’t remember a time when I didn’t want to be in health and wellness care. My path, however, has been a little curvy until just recently. I studied at Rutgers University in New Jersey in hopes of becoming a nurse, then switched midway to exercise science to pursue physical therapy. Once graduated, I married my lovely husband, Zack, and we moved to North Texas with our new chunky chocolate lab, Moby. As Zack was finishing his schooling at UNT, I fell upon an opportunity working with memory care residents at an assisted living in Dallas.

There I saw the miraculous healing properties of physical touch – how energetic and impressive it is. I watched first hand non-verbal residents come to life with clarity, just after a short, yet intentional, hand massage. I was hooked. Almost 2 years after those impactful experiences, I finally had the opportunity to pursue massage therapy at Parker University.

Now, I am a part of this wonderful group of skilled, caring individuals. I believe that as a licensed massage therapist, I can compliment the holistic wellness provided by chiropractic care. I am so proud and honored to be a member of the HealthWorks team!

I would love to tell you that I have always known about chiropractic and the benefits of seeing a chiropractor but sadly I cannot. I was a divorced mom of 2 boys, Preston and Parker, working at a Preschool since 1999. My life consisted of my boys, their sports, preschool activities and learning anything I could that pertain to preschool and nurturing of little minds. A couple of years ago I had the opportunity to make a career change; it was scary, but I was READY. I knew I didn’t just want just any job, it had to be special, feel “family” like, warm and loving. I found this amazing place called HealthWorks and was extremely blessed to be given the chance to work here and with their, now our, wonderful patients. Prior to working here, I didn’t really grasp what Chiropractic is. I honestly thought it was for car accidents and older generations. You can imagine my surprise when I saw whole families and CHILDREN here.

I have seen first-hand the power of the Atlas adjustment. My oldest son, Preston, has always had this little “swag” stance and I just thought it was the way he stood to be cool. After his new patient appointment with the x-rays and scans to see what goes on below the surface, I saw that his swag stance was in fact his atlas misalignment and he had nerve inflammation that was making him stand that way! After his first Atlas adjustment I was amazed at the results and how his posture had changed dramatically. My question now is, “Why doesn’t EVERYONE see a Chiropractor?”

I married an amazing, supportive and lover-of-all-things-chiropractic husband, Craig, in July of 2016. With Craig’s 3 boys and my 2, we are a blended family of 5 boys and 2 dogs!

I’m Erika Greene-Smith and thrilled to be a part of the Healthworks family. I’m married to Cedric Smith and together we have two kids, Xavier and Sierra along with our dog, Rocco.

In January of 2014, our family was faced with the sudden death of my oldest sister, Lisa. That changed everything for me as you can imagine. She died of health related issues. That lead me on a journey of evaluating my own life. I knew I could not change her situation but it lead me on a journey of evaluating and taking responsibility for my own life.

I began to focus on the importance of things that help me nurture and grow as it relates to my body, mind, and spirit. I will spend the rest of my life focusing on that for myself and encouraging that for others as well.

Throughout my professional life, I have always found joy when doing these three tasks:

1. Serving
2. Learning
3. Encouraging

Since I’ve joined the Healthworks family, I’ve been able to continue doing what I enjoy doing. I am honored and thrilled to be a part of this amazing team and look forward to serving each one of you. Until I see you at your next visit to remind you, know that your wellness is important. It matters and most importantly, you matter.
